DIY Flower Crown
by Alexandria Dickerson
I have been enjoying these spring walks and all of the fresh blooms! Making flower crowns is a creative way to connect with the season and adorn yourself with spring!
While out on my walk I found crocus, snowdrops, summer snowflake, periwinkle, and purple dead nettle. I also clipped some boxwood and overwintered lavender and rosemary sprigs. These fresh-cut sprigs make for a nice structured base for the flower crown.
Supplies Needed:
Plant materials (fresh cut sprigs & fresh flowers with stems)
Floral wire
Scissors
Wire cutters
Step 1: Collect sprigs of greenery and flowers found around your yard. Flower crowns can also be made from store-bought bouquets.
Step 2: Form your circular crown base shape by joining both ends of the greenery sprig and fasten with floral wire by wrapping it around multiple times where the two ends meet. If you can’t find a singular piece of greenery that is long enough, you can attach multiple pieces together with the floral wire and then join both ends together.
Step 3: Add the flowers one at a time or in small clusters to the crown base with floral wire. *Tip- cut the wire longer than needed and leave a “tail” after each flower, in order to make adding other flowers easier (see photo above for visual reference). Simply place the base of the next flower near the “tail” of floral wire and wrap it multiple times along a short segment of the stem to secure it into place. Continue this step until you have the desired amount of flowers attached to the crown base.
Step 4: Finish your flower crown by clipping away any extra pieces of floral wire and flower stems. Adorn yourself with your newly made flower crown! *Tip- store in a dark cool place when not wearing it. to extend its freshness. You can even place your flower crown aside to dry out and wear it dried as well.
